For the first time ever, the Anytime Fitness 10km event at the McGrath Launceston Running Festival has sold out.
It follows a trend around the world in global events post pandemic, with this weekend’s event featuring a 60% growth on last year.
Among them is a pointy end of elite athletes once again ready to run some of the fastest 10km times in Australia. Triple Olympian Genevieve Gregson returns for the first time since she won in 2020. Her return coincides on the eve of the announcement of the Australian marathon team for the Paris Olympics, of which she is in the mix for selection, along with Eloise Wellings who also has attained the Olympic marathon qualifier. It’s been an anxious wait for those in contention and of course their fans, many of whom will be running alongside Gregson and Wellings this Sunday.
They’ll be looking to make an assault on the Australian Allcomers record of 31:37 which was set last year by race winner Leanne Pompeani.
The men’s field oozes depth, with 14 men having lifetime best inside 30minutes.
After a breakthrough performance last year when he led into the home straight, Ed Marks returns. His time last year of 28:13 is the second fastest ever on the course and he’ll start as the race favourite.
Launceston’s Sam Clifford brings as much momentum as anyone with them, having set a personal best in winning last weekend’s Sydney 10 in 29:02, as he carries the number 3 rank into the race.
2021 winner Isaac Heyne is back, along with Olympic Finalist Ryan Gregson and Commonwealth Games representative James Nipperess. Joel Tobin-White will have his first crack at the 10km journey, having podium in the half marathon on numerous occasions.
